Best Sandals Resort for First-Timers

Four resorts that are hard to get wrong, and the one variable most first-timers underestimate.

Which Sandals resort is best for a first visit?

For most first-timers: Sandals Dunn's River in Jamaica or Sandals Grande St. Lucian in Saint Lucia. Dunn's River is the newest property with a short transfer; Grande St. Lucian has the strongest all-round combination of beach, activities and scenery.

There is no single right answer, because the best first Sandals depends on how far you want to fly and what you want the week to feel like. But these four are the ones that consistently work:

ResortIslandTransferWhy it suits a first visit
Dunn's RiverJamaica~1 h 30 from MBJThe newest resort in Jamaica, 12 restaurants, modern throughout. Very little to go wrong.
Grande St. LucianSaint Lucia~2 h from UVFOne of the best beaches in the portfolio, 12 restaurants, and access to two sister resorts.
Royal BarbadosBarbados~15 min from BGIAll-suite, rooftop pool, and a second resort next door included. Short transfer.
Grande AntiguaAntigua~20 min from ANUDickenson Bay, widely rated among the best beaches in the Caribbean. Short transfer.

What do first-timers most often get wrong?

Transfer time. People choose a resort on photographs and then discover the drive from the airport is two hours each way, which removes most of a day at each end of a short trip.

Transfers range from about five minutes at Sandals Grenada to roughly two hours in Saint Lucia. On a ten-day holiday that is noise. On a five-night trip it is a real cost.

If your trip is short, weight the transfer heavily. Grenada, Royal Bahamian, Royal Barbados and Grande Antigua are all under half an hour.

Should a first-timer book a butler suite?

Usually not. A butler is excellent and it is also the most expensive way to spend the money. For a first trip, a longer stay in a lower room category almost always delivers more holiday.

Nothing about the resort experience changes with room category: the same restaurants, the same bars, the same beach. Here is what actually changes.

Which Jamaica resorts are open right now?

Ochi, Dunn's River, Negril and Royal Plantation. Sandals Montego Bay, Royal Caribbean and South Coast are closed for a $200 million rebuild and reopen in November and December 2026.

This matters for first-timers specifically, because Sandals Montego Bay is the resort most often recommended to them — it is the original, and it is fifteen minutes from the airport. It is also shut until 18 December 2026. Several guides still recommend it without saying so.

Full detail in the Jamaica resort guide.

Is it worth using a travel agent for a first Sandals booking?

It costs the same either way, so the question is only whether the advice is useful — and for a first booking, when you do not yet know the room categories or the resort personalities, it usually is.

The rate is identical because the resort pays the commission. How that works.

First trip, and not sure where to start?

Flight time, transfer time and the feel of the resort matter more than the room. Live rates will show you what your dates actually cost.
